I-League Sunday Round Up

Round III of the I-League 2008-2009 season winded down on Sunday as Dempo and Air India registered impressive wins while Chirag United continued their good performance with a draw at home.

Goan giants Dempo edged past Vasco Sports Club 2-1 at the Nehru Stadium in Fotorda to earn their first victory of the new I-League season. Two goals in six minutes in the first half were good enough for the reigning I-League champions to scrape through to their first victory of the season.

Roberto Silva headed home in the 24th minute after Anthony Pereira sent a high cross. Ranty Martins then doubled the lead six minutes later when he taped home a cross from Pereira again.

That spurred Vasco to action and they quickly came out of their shell, striker Ravshan Teshabaev pulling back a goal for Vasco in the 32nd minute after a mistake from Dempo defender John Dias. Vasco continued to attack in the second half and came close to getting the equalizer in the 58th minute when Menino Fernandes’ curling shot was put out of sander by Dempo goalkeeper Satish Kumar.

Elsewhere on Sunday in the I-League, Chirag United did quite well to hold Churchill Brothers to a goalless draw at the Barasat Stadium. Snehashish Chakraborty of Chirag was adjudged the man of the match. Chirag now have four points from three matches.

In the other match on Sunday, Air India achieved an astonishing victory as they defeated Kolkata giants East Bengal at the Coopearage Ground, Surojit Roy and Michael Tayo scoring the goals.
