I-League: Saturday Round Up

JCT, Sporting Club de Goa and Mumbai FC defeated Mohammedan Sporting, Mohun Bagan and Mahindra United respectively in the I-League on Saturday to make it a day when all the home teams won their matches.

While JCT beat Mohammedan 2-0 at the Guru Nanak Dev Stadium, Sporting won by the same margin against Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan. Meanwhile, Mumbai FC continued their good display in the I-League as they won 1-0 against Mahindra United.

JCT were dominant at home against Kolkata side Mohammedan and two goals were enough to see them gather three vital points. Baljit Sahni gave them the lead in added minutes of the first half and then man-of-the-match Eduardo Da Silva secured the victory for JCT in the 68th minute.

Sporting Club de Goa, meanwhile, won their third match in a row as goals from Wilton Gomes and Nathaniel Amos were enough see the Goan giants gain a comfortable victory over former National Football League champions Mohun Bagan.

Sporting were dominant right from the start with Joseph Pereira and Harmanjot Khabra combining well with each other in the initial stages; striker Joychandra too ably contributed at the start. Sporting deservedly took the lead in the 26th minute when Pereira delivered an exquisite cross that Wilton Gomes headed towards the goal. Defender Mohan Raj then shot the ball into the own net to give Sporting a 1-0 lead.

Mohun Bagan were stunned by that goal but couldn't launch any major attack, in spite of striker Jose Ramirez Barretto sending in some good crosses which went to waste. Sporting secured all three points two minutes after the breather when Joseph Pereira delivered a cross from the left and Nathaniel Amos headed the ball to the far end of the post.

In another I-League match on Saturday, Mumbai FC defeated Mahindra United 1-0 at the Cooperage Stadium.
